Globe Lamp

Globe Lamp

Globe Lamp is an RGB Arduino-powered desk lamp with a novel on-off switch mechanism. Users can press on the top of the lamp to turn it on and off, and the LED lights can be reprogrammed to any color.

Globe Lamp was created by me (James Muir) and Haiyang Yu as the final project of our TECHIN 511 class. We collaborated on this project 100% remotely with Haiyang in China and me in the United States.

My Contributions

Ideation Sketches

I drew some sketches of different ideas for lamp shapes and designs.

Mechanical Sketches

I drew these sketches during the development of the mechanical structure.

CAD Model

I created a CAD model of our design using Fusion 360.

Hole Size Tester

I 3D printed a hole size tester to figure out how big to make the button and captive nut holes.

3D Printed Base

I 3D printed the base of the lamp from the CAD model.

Electronics Testing

I tested the RGB electronics with a breadboard before I soldered them into the final assembly.

Electronics Assembly

I soldered all of the electronics together and mounted them in the electronics

Complete Assembly

I assembled the base, dome, and electronics to complete the lamp.

Other Components

Early Concept CAD Model

A CAD model Haiyang made of an early concept

Balloon Model

A model of our selected design that Haiyang made out of cardboard and a balloon
